Parenting is essential work that shapes children, families, and communities. However, it is often undervalued and unsupported. This report demonstrates that parents in our community are working hard to keep themselves and their families well — but that this may not be enough for children’s wellbeing. The report highlights the systemic challenges that parents face, including unaffordability, childcare access, barriers to services (like primary healthcare), feeling isolated and overwhelmed.

Drawing on more than 560 survey responses and the insights of 57 focus group participants, the research captures the realities of parenting in this community. It provides insights into what families need and offers an extensive set of recommendations for how the community can help.

“In the survey, 51% of parents reported they always or often felt stressed over the last 6 months. But parents also told us what they need to thrive,” said Naomi Nichols, Director, Research for Social Change Lab. “Their voices reveal the real conditions of parenting work in our city and the opportunities for positive change.”

“Helping parents effectively requires cross-sector collaboration and upstream solutions. When communities, schools, health and social services, and government work together, we can reduce stress, build stronger families, and help children grow up healthy and safe.” said Dr. Thomas Piggott, Medical Officer of Health and Chief Executive Officer for Lakelands Public Health.

To share key findings widely, the Research for Social Change Lab is launching a three-week social media campaign beginning Tuesday, October 21st, 2025. The campaign will present highlights and actionable insights from the report on Instagram at @socialchangelab.
