<image:caption>Welcome to the Research for Social Change Lab. We’re a community-engaged research collective in pursuit of justice and equity in Nogojiwanong/Peterborough. With community partners, we design and execute research projects that generate actionable knowledge and creative solutions to problems such as homelessness, social exclusion and poverty. By prioritizing community interests and striving to learn from and be accountable to lived expertise, we aim to politicize knowledge production and mobilize university resources for social change. The Research for Social Change Lab is based at Trent University in Nogojiwanong/Peterborough, on the traditional territory of the Michi Saagiig First Nations.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Post Doctoral Fellow Alex Nelson is a white settler living in London, ON, and a PhD Candidate at Western University. Their research focuses on housing justice, housing rights, and community-led advocacy movements – exploring how gender-diverse people with lived experience of homelessness mobilize their experiences in shaping and resisting policy decisions and frameworks. Working with the Social Change Lab, Alex will be considering both how impacted communities navigate national right to housing mechanisms, and the grassroots and local initiatives communities undertake to protect and uphold the right to housing. Alex’s academic research and community involvement is deeply informed by their lived experience of homelessness and involvement in the child welfare system, as well as their experiences at the intersection of queerness and disability. As an advocate, Alex works to advance lived experience leadership and the role of queer and disabled communities in realizing housing justice.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Research Assistant Phil self-identifies as a human being. He is currently working towards his BASc in Psychology at Trent University. His academic interests include the study of consciousness, psychology, and sociology. More specifically, how addiction, mental health, and homelessness form a tri-morbidity that shapes the lives of those who experience all three concurrently. Phil has over a quarter of a century of lived experience dealing with all three issues personally and seven to eight years of professional experience in the field. He strives to empower vulnerable youth with knowledge of how bureaucracy can be weaponized and how to navigate these systems towards outcomes that are heavily balanced in their favour. Phil firmly believes that the reinstitution of personal agency for vulnerable people can and should come from the circumvention of harmful bureaucratic systems, thereby reinvigorating the sense of self and control over one’s choices. Phil is a published author of multiple poetry collections, and his hobbies include mountain biking, kayaking, swimming, and generally anything outdoors, as well as reading, writing, painting, and photography. He also participates in social change movements and, throughout his life, has been involved with many groups dedicated to activities that elicit such change. Phil hopes to go as far as he can academically, with the ultimate goal of a PhD in psychology.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Research Communications Facilitator Justine-Marie is a multimedia artist from Jamaica still learning how to navigate Ontario. A recent MA graduate from the Trent Public Texts program, her creative journey is an exploration of the profound connections between storytelling, activism, and the powerful potential of decolonial praxis within the realm of art and the written word. Her artistic practice delves into the nuances of dismantling oppressive systems, emphasising the importance of reclaiming narratives and perspectives that have been historically silenced. With threads of personal narrative, collective memory, and social commentary, Justine invites viewers and readers alike to engage with marginalized narratives, amplifying voices that have long been marginalized and sparking conversations that are both necessary and explore the limitless possibilities of storytelling as a catalyst for political change.</image:caption>

Her interdisciplinary background enables her to approach her research holistically, drawing from different fields and methodologies. At the Research for Social Change Lab (RSCL), Lilian is a research assistant. She is working to develop a cross-sectoral roadmap for addressing homelessness in Peterborough, based on the two community housing forums that RSCL co-organized in May 2023 and February 2024. Lilian lives in Toronto but visits her hometown of Peterborough often. To rest, she loves cooking, hiking, paddling, and exploring her neighbourhood. After working with a Way Home Canada, Ashleigh moved on to Nourish, a program ran by the YWCA. Building on previous themes of community development, Ashleigh focused on civic engagement, food security and poverty. She supported workshops for seniors on civic issues and aging. Also, she supported participants through Rentsmart. She designed a story telling workshop series for participants to share their life stories. <image:title>In Their Own Words: Parenting in Peterborough - “Chronic Stress in Families: What it is; Why it Matters; What We Can Do About it”</image:title>
<image:caption>Trent researchers (Naomi Nichols and Mary Anne Martin) joined together with parent researchers in the fall of 2023 to collaborate on the upcoming parent focus groups and began this process by working with an art therapist (Brian Nichols) in the community to bring together the group and facilitate communication. Those sessions led us to create artistic renderings of themes and topics that parents in our community may experience (example: balancing work/childcare). These imperfect images were a reflection on what parents today may feel or encounter.</image:caption>

<image:title>In Their Own Words: Parenting in Peterborough - Making “Chronic Stress in Families: What it is; why it matters; what we can do about it”</image:title>
<image:caption>The limiting guidelines in making the art allowed for a letting go of a need for perfection, an open playfulness to create, and hopefully more clarity in concept. The images were made with craft paper (up to three colours were offered) and scissors. The team members split up into pairs and selected themes then made their images, came back together to discuss and give feedback. Once that was done, we were able to glue the craft paper in place making them permanent and pairing them with a sentence that reflected the initial prompt/theme. This first zine “Chronic Stress in Families: What it is; why it matters; what we can do about it,” looks at themes such as stressors that families face, effects of stress on the body, and parent/caregiver relationships with kids. Initially, we had thought to focus on the science of stress but after much deliberation we realized that the core concepts and some accessible solutions might be more useful. Once the wording was done, we wanted to pair the words with the images from our parents. Some of the images included are from the original artistic work we did together from the fall-winter facilitated arts process and some were made specifically for these zines.</image:caption>

<image:title>In Their Own Words: Parenting in Peterborough - “It’s Not Too Late”</image:title>
<image:caption>We felt that our first zine, while informative, might leave the readers wondering what they could do to mitigate the negative outcomes of stress and adversity they themselves might have experienced both in the past and present. This shared concern led us to create our second zine “It’s Not Too Late: Addressing adversity in early life”. These zines came from our team’s desire to shed light on the difficulties that families face especially those feeling the added social and financial pressures currently felt by many in our community. The zine defines adverse childhood experiences (ACES), identifies opportunities for communities to better support parents, and also proposes some de-stressing strategies that our team have tried. We hope they are helpful. More zines may be in our future</image:caption>

<image:title>In Their Own Words: Parenting in Peterborough - Peterborough Parenting Resource List</image:title>
<image:caption>During the process of designing the focus groups our team realized we wanted to provide participants with a physical resource that might help folks manage some of the themes discussed in the sessions. We hope that the focus group discussions will provide a positive space for people to build connections, feel seen, and openly discuss their diverse experiences, but we have also compiled a list of resources that help address some of the key stressors discussed to be accessed by our wider community as well.</image:caption>
